The Boroughs Founders - Dan & Fern

Veterans of the Charleston market, we established one of the city’s first speciality hospitality firms.

We’re well-connected in the local community, incredibly organized, and a little obsessive about clean, functional spaces. We’re smart, savvy, and we take transparency seriously.

On top of all that, we also happen to be genuinely fun group who love our city. We both enjoy traveling and between us, we’ve seen a lot of the world - but we still don’t think there’s anywhere better than Charleston to call home.

The Boroughs Founder - Dan Patternson

Dan Paterson

Dan moved to Charleston in 2015 after years spent on the road as a consultant. The primary catalyst for the transition to the Holy City was to help a close friend build a business. While building that startup from their apartment, his day-job commitments remained, taking him back on the road for weeks at a time. The unused apartment became his first opportunity to experiment with a new (for him) platform: Airbnb. Many years later, the experiment of renting out his apartment in Elliotborough has matured into The Boroughs.

Dan is an avid traveler. After spending thousands of nights over the years in cookie-cutter corporate hotels inconveniently located in nondescript suburbs, it is very rewarding for him to create spaces that serve as a “home base” for exploration and discovery. Being able to work with close friends and create spaces for groups to enjoy the neighborhoods, restaurants, and shops he loves is extremely fulfilling. Any free moment Dan can steal away from work is spent with his wife and daughter. Beach days, golf cart rides, and Off Track Ice Cream are his go-tos. He enjoys travel, tennis, golf, and all aspects of design (you can see these touches throughout the properties).

A couple of notes on his favorite Charleston spots: His favorite beach is Sullivan’s Island, with Station 30 being the best spot (keep it a secret for him!). His favorite bar is Bin 152, which offers incredible wine, cheese, charcuterie, plus great service and a cozy vibe. The best meal in Charleston is at Chez Nous — order a bottle of chilled Gamay and one of everything off the menu.

The Boroughs Founder - Fern Russell

Fernando Russell

Fernando arrived in Charleston in 2015, making his way from the sun-drenched beaches of the Dominican Republic. His mission wasn’t just about chasing the American dream; it was about winning the heart of the woman who now brings immeasurable happiness to his life—his wonderful wife.

While he has a background in commercial banking, Fernando found a passion for property management and showing guests his favorite spots in his beloved city. An entrepreneur at heart, he has helped start two other businesses, all while launching The Boroughs. Charleston has a vibrant food and beverage scene, and you can often find Fernando at local spots, enjoying time with friends and family. This emphasis on connections is mirrored in his passion for hospitality—turning it into reality is a dream come true. You’ll easily find him out and about in downtown Charleston, enjoying all the amazing places this town has to offer.

A couple of notes on his favorite Charleston spots: Kiawah Island is his favorite place for a quiet day on the water. When it comes to a stellar bar scene, Halls takes the crown without question. It’s a gathering place where stories and laughter intertwine, creating memories that last. If Fernando were to paint you a picture of his ideal day in Charleston, it’d start with a fresh cortado and a savory bacon taco from Babas on Meeting. For lunch, he’d indulge in a pastrami swordfish sandwich from 167 Raw. Then, he’d unwind with an evening cocktail at the Citrus Club rooftop and finish out the day with a delightful dinner at The Establishment.

Director of Sales

Alex Gregorie

Alex’s whole family is from Charleston, and although he has lived in many other places, including Florida, California, and Montana, he always knew he would end up back in Charleston.

With a passion for real estate, Alex considers it a dream to live his passion every day with an open-minded and hardworking team. He spends his days meeting property owners and investors of all types, navigating the day-to-day nuances of investment real estate.

In his free time, Alex loves to surf at Folly Beach, go fishing, go hunting, work on his family’s farm in the ACE Basin, try the endless new restaurants that pop up in town, and travel as much as he can.

A couple of notes on his favorite Charleston spots: Torres Superettes for quick, authentic tacos and burritos; Jack of Cups on Folly Beach; Huriyali for some quick, healthy eats. Also, strolling around The Battery and White Point Gardens is timeless, as is visiting Colonial Lake.

Director of Operations

Hudson Cole

Hudson spent five years in Greenville after graduating from The Citadel. He worked as an engineer while learning everything he could about real estate. Once he connected with Dan and Fernando, he made the leap into real estate and has been helping with the operations of the company ever since. Hudson enjoys creating processes and implementing them, as well as making the guest experience seamless and enjoyable. When he’s not in the office, you can find Hudson either enjoying time with friends or at the gym. With so many outdoor activities to enjoy in Charleston, his two favorites are golfing and boating.

A couple of notes on his favorite Charleston spots: Outside of the office, you can find Hudson at The Daily at least twice a week, getting their breakfast burrito or their famous BLT. His downtown Thursday night routine includes Indaco, Felix, and then the Cocktail Club. His regular stop in Mount Pleasant is the wine shop, followed by Post House.
